New Redwood Deck Construction with Sliding Door Installation

Service: Deck Construction
Completion Date: July, 2023
Location: Grass Valley, CA

Overview

In this project we completed a stunning redwood deck construction project from scratch, which included the installation of a new sliding door from the living room, seamlessly extending the indoor space into a beautiful outdoor living area.

Scope of Work:

  • Site Preparation: The project began with clearing and leveling the site to establish a solid foundation for the new deck. Proper grading ensured stability and drainage for the structure.
  • Foundation and Framing: A sturdy foundation and frame were built using treated lumber, designed to support the deck’s weight and provide a reliable base for the redwood decking.
  • Redwood Deck Installation: We selected premium redwood for its durability and natural beauty. The boards were meticulously installed, creating a smooth, elegant surface that highlights the rich tones and grain of the wood.
  • Sliding Door Installation: As part of the project, we installed a new sliding door from the living room, providing easy access to the deck. This door not only enhances the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces but also brings in natural light and opens up the living area.
  • Custom Railings and Finishing Touches: Custom redwood railings were added to complement the deck’s design while ensuring safety. The deck was then sealed to protect against the elements, guaranteeing long-lasting beauty and functionality.

Final Inspection:
A comprehensive final inspection was conducted to ensure every aspect of the deck and sliding door installation met our high standards, followed by a client walkthrough to confirm their satisfaction.

Key Lessons From This Project

Why Hidden Damage Goes Undetected

Water intrusion and termite damage often develop behind exterior cladding over many years before any surface signs appear. By the time paint bubbles or wood feels soft, the damage behind the wall is frequently extensive. A licensed contractor assessing any exterior project will look for signs of hidden damage before scoping the work.

Why You Need a Licensed GC for Exterior Work

A door installer or siding crew can replace surfaces – but they cannot pull structural permits, perform engineering assessments, or legally repair deteriorated framing. When hidden structural damage is discovered mid-project, only a licensed general contractor has the scope and licensing to address it properly. Condor Builders is CSLB #1103096.

The Value of Catching It Early

The homeowner in this project had no idea the structural damage existed. Left unaddressed, water intrusion and termite damage to structural framing can compromise a home’s integrity over time and create significantly larger repair costs – or safety risks – down the line. This restoration returned the home to full structural integrity and added decades to its lifespan.
